Description

What do you think about abandon DSL for MCNLive (http://www.mcnlive.org/) ? It's a easier to maintain MCNLive distribution: Just boot on it, install and save. DSL is perfect for old computer with small configuration.

I never heard about this mcnlive. Actually some people complained that DSL was too poor for some users. I think it is important to know what is the goal of hikarunix.

I will try this mcnlive. One point that we should consider is the difficulty to create new iso images with new installed software.

The last Hikarunix liveCD was enought for a new user (just some icons on the desktop). DSL can be update and usable with old computer... Besides, we can create several myDSL extension for better installation with new DSL distribution.

i have downloaded and tried the MCNlive distro. it looks very nice, has a mini KDE (like kubuntu, my preferred distro).

i think it can be nice to use this MCNlive, but are you sure it is easy to strip down to remove the unnecessary software, and install java and the go software? there should be a doc somewhere that explains how to do it.

as you say, hikarunix was easy to use, but i would like to have input from novice people.

i don't know, i think we should start by deciding which apps to install, which documents, in which languages, etc. then trying to create a iso, either using DSL or MCNlive, what is faster.

If we want to release a fresh new Hikarunix version this year, i think it's better to update the distribution and the softwares from 0.5 to 0.6 now.

After, we can think about the distribution in itself with minimal requirements (deb or rpm, easy to use and to maintain, etc.).

I agree with that ! Let's go :)

agree with Mickael. the first thing somebody should do is to try to rebuild a new iso, with some very small changes, like changing the html page, or something like that. then, perhaps reinstall some application, like kgs.

and then document the whole procedure, so that anyone can do it.

i found the document Karl gave me, i had linked to it but the link was broken. i have uploaded it here, in html and pdf format.

one more question : should we start from the latest hikarunix (HU) iso, or from one of the latest DSL isos? DSL has undergone a lot of improvements since HU stopped. even HU was not based on the latest DSLs.

i will answer myself : i guess it is easier to start from the latest HU. the goal is to provide a tool for go players, not for linux freaks. but at some point this should be reconsidered.

btw ...

Replying to Mickaël:

... to update the distribution and the softwares from 0.5 to 0.6 now.

hmmm. the last release was 0.4, i guess. see its copy on the internet archive

here i just found out (you probably knew) that the old site hikarunix.org is down and waiting for resale :(

Yes, I made a mistake with the version number :)

To answer to your question, i think we can start from the lastest HU and from the latest DSL.

From the lastest HU, we take documentations, game and software and add new one (see my proposition), test them, ask legal authorization, check license, etc. and maintain that list. This is the core.

Then, we must pack the software for the distribution we choose: in the case of the latest DSL, that mean we must debianized our software. We can even build a task-go package ie a virtual package that will install all the software.

If we change our mind and decide to use MCNLive, we pack our core list with the correct file format (RPM in that case).

About the domain name : we still have hikarunix.net, hikarunix.info, etc. :)

Yes, according to me, it's a must to have the same "Desktop" from the latest HU. The last DSL provide a lot of tools, I played yesterday with it, and I install some software using apt. In the futur, we can imagine to create a Go repository for apt. I try to install java using myDSL java package (it was corrupt), so the last way is to install it by the main installer provided by Sun.

Milestone Decide on basic setup deleted

  • owner changed from somebody to cedric_neal.
  • status changed from new to assigned.
  • type changed from defect to task.

Repository is an excellent idea... DSL isn't so flexible and doesn't support apt stuff ! I suggest Live CD Xubuntu (LTS version) with improvements ! A repository for apt will be provide, it'll be easy to update software, user home, translation... for packaging Hikarunix !
